Developed closely with skippers, Defra, and JNCC, the Seabird Safe Toolkits come in versions for fishermen and regulators.
The fishermen’s Toolkit sets out clear and simple guidance for cutting the chances of seabirds being caught on hooks or nets, and how to safely free, handle, and release animals from gear.
The regulators’ Toolkit focuses on the ‘ecosystem’ of groups and policies in the UK involved in managing seabird bycatch, and shares case studies of collaboratively-developed methods that have proved effective at reducing bycatch in a range of fisheries.
Feel free to share the digital versions of the guidance far and wide. And if you’re a fisherman or fishing industry representative, please get in touch if you are keen to received a printed version.
