Branchline Hauler

WHAT IS A BRANCHLINE HAULER?

A branchline hauler, also known as a snood hauler, is a mechanical device used to accelerate the process of hauling lines in longline pelagic fisheries, minimising the time that the lines lie on or close to the surface, and reducing the opportunity for seabirds to interact with baited hooks.

CURRENT RESEARCH

Currently, there are insufficient data to support branchline haulers in reducing seabird bycatch. Studies in the CCAMLR Patagonian toothfish fishery have suggested that a combination of hauling mitigation methods could reduce bycatch of seabirds when used in combination.
